Kibale Forest

The primate capital

Thirteen primate species and some of East Africa’s finest chimpanzee tracking.

Kibale holds one of the highest primate densities in Africa — chimpanzees plus a long supporting cast of monkeys, and a bird list that rewards an early start. Tracking is often vocal and fast; the forest is closer and warmer than Bwindi.

We usually stay two nights so you are not driving out on the afternoon you have just walked. Bigodi wetland and crater-lake country sit next door if you want a second, slower day.

Why here

Kibale is the primate counterpart to gorilla country. Together they tell a fuller Uganda story than either forest alone.

Practical information

Chimpanzee permits are easier than gorilla permits but still book out on busy weeks. Trails can be muddy. Insect repellent and long sleeves earn their place.
